An uncorrected vision problem can significantly impair your child’s academic success, social skills, and overall well-being. While many parents understand the necessity of regular check-ups with pediatricians, the importance of regular pediatric eye exams is often overlooked. Comprehensive eye care for children is critical to their overall health and academic performance, and at Total Eye Care, we’re here to guide you every step of the way.
Why Regular Eye Exams Are So Important For Children
Several misconceptions persist about children’s vision care. It is often mistakenly believed that only kids with glasses”need regular eye exams. The reality is that many vision problems are not obvious, and can only be detected through comprehensive eye examination by an expert ophthalmologist like our team at Total Eye Care. We can catch eye conditions early so they can be treated more effectively.
On top of finding eye concerns early, regular pediatric eye exams can also ensure we discover anything that could get in the way of your child’s performance at school. Undetected vision issues can lead to difficulty in reading and writing and negatively impact their academic achievements. Eye issues can also affect how well they connect with others. A regular eye exam can ensure they thrive in every aspect of their lives as they grow.
When Should Children Have Their Eyes Checked?
The American Optometric Association (AOA) recommends that children’s eye exams should start at six months. They should have another eye exam at some point between the ages of 3 and 5 and then again just before they enter first grade.
After that, we recommend a comprehensive eye exam every two years if your child has no risk factors. If they eventually have vision problems and need glasses, an annual exam is typically necessary to monitor their vision.
Pediatric Eye Care Services at Total Eye Care
At Total Eye Care, we offer comprehensive pediatric eye care services under the expert guidance of our team of experienced ophthalmologists. Our sophisticated screening tests can detect common eye problems such as nearsightedness, farsightedness, and astigmatism, along with other eye health issues such as pink eye, strabismus, or color blindness.
Maintaining Optimal Eye Health
Beyond eye exams, you can take steps to protect your child’s vision at home. Ensure a balanced diet, limit screen time, encourage outdoor play, and teach your child about the importance of not straining their eyes. Providing your child with a pair of sunglasses to protect their eyes from harmful UV rays is also a great way to keep their eyes safe.
