If you are one of the 24 million people suffering from ocular allergies, consider getting an allergy test at our office. Routine eye care is important for preventing allergy symptoms. Our doctors can perform a simple prick or “scratch” test in the office to identify exactly what you are allergic to. We can then create a customized treatment specific to your needs.
This simple test may be covered under your medical insurance. It superficially scratches the surface of the skin, applying the allergens to be tested.
Who Should Get Tested for Allergies?
Anyone suffering from the following would be a candidate:
- Itchy eyes
- Red/bloodshot eyes
- Watery eyes
- Swollen eyes
- Nasal congestion
- Itchy nose
- Sneezing
How Will My Allergies Be Treated?
Once our doctors know the allergens causing your symptoms, an effective treatment plan can be recommended. First, every effort should be made to avoid and/or minimize allergen exposure.
Otherwise, medications are routinely used to manage symptoms related to allergies. Your test results will allow our doctors to determine the best oral and topical medication to use depending upon your specific allergies. These can include vasoconstrictors, antihistamines, and/or steroid treatment.
When allergy season is in full swing, our exam rooms are filled with cases of red, itchy, and irritated eyes. Allergic conjunctivitis is one of our patients’ most common causes of seasonal red eyes.
When our bodies are exposed to high pollen counts in the air from grass, ragweed, and trees, histamine is released into our bloodstream. The histamine is released through a cyclical pathway that triggers the five common symptoms of allergies: heat, pain, swelling, redness, and itching.
Preservative-free artificial tears and cool compresses are great ways for most allergy sufferers to decrease symptoms. When medical intervention is necessary, though, over-the-counter drops should be avoided in most cases.
Many OTC remedies can successfully treat the symptoms of allergies but are not very successful in treating the chronic pathway of conjunctivitis. Drops prescribed by one of our physicians have been studied and are proven to be exponentially more successful in treating symptoms and resolving inflammation much faster than other methods.
Why Medical Intervention is Important
When over-the-counter (OTC) remedies fail to provide adequate relief, seeking professional care is essential. While OTC drops can be helpful for mild cases of allergies, they often fall short in addressing chronic allergic conjunctivitis. These remedies treat the symptoms temporarily but do little to resolve the underlying inflammation that causes long-term discomfort.
At Total Eye Care, our prescription treatments offer long-term relief and protect your eyes from further damage caused by chronic inflammation by resolving the root cause faster and more effectively than OTC methods.
