What are Eye Exams?
Eye exams are thorough evaluations of your vision and eye health conducted by a qualified eye care professional. These exams are crucial for detecting vision problems, eye diseases, or other health issues affecting your eyes. By regularly undergoing eye exams, you can catch any potential issues early and take proactive steps to maintain optimal eye health.
Routine Eye Exams
Routine eye exams are designed to assess your overall eye health and determine if you need vision correction, such as glasses or contact lenses. During a routine eye exam, your eye doctor will perform a series of tests to evaluate your visual acuity, eye muscle function, and peripheral vision. They will also examine your eyes’ internal and external structures for signs of eye diseases like glaucoma, cataracts, or macular degeneration.
Medical Eye Exam
Medical eye exams focus on diagnosing and managing specific eye conditions or diseases. If you are experiencing symptoms such as blurry vision, eye pain, floaters, or flashes of light, or if you have been diagnosed with an eye condition, a medical eye exam is necessary. During a medical eye exam, your eye care provider may perform additional tests to comprehensively understand your eye health and determine the best course of treatment.
Pediatric Eye Exams
Children’s eyes are constantly developing, and early detection of vision issues is crucial for their growth and learning. Pediatric eye exams are specially designed to assess a child’s vision and eye health. At Total Eye Care, our team has extensive experience working with children and ensuring a comfortable, stress-free experience.
What to Expect During Your Eye Exam
Your eye exam at Total Eye Care will be a comprehensive and personalized experience. The process can typically be summarized in five steps:
- Your eye care professional will review your medical history, including any medications you are taking and any family history of eye conditions.
- You will undergo a vision test, which includes reading letters on a chart to measure visual acuity and determine whether corrective lenses or corrective procedures such as LASIK are needed.
- Movement and coordination tests evaluate how well your eyes work together and how effectively they can track moving objects.
- Your eye doctor will examine your eyes’ internal and external structures using advanced tools and technology for signs of disease or other issues.
- Depending on your needs, additional tests like dilation, tonometry (to measure eye pressure), or imaging may be performed to get a detailed view of your eye health.
When Should You Undergo an Eye Exam?
The frequency of eye exams varies based on age, risk factors, and whether you wear corrective lenses. Children should have their first eye exam at six months of age, followed by another at three years old, and again before starting school. After that, they should have yearly exams or as their eye doctor advises.
Adults between 20 and 39 should have an eye exam every 2-3 years. Eye exams are recommended every 1-2 years for adults aged 40 to 64, as this is the age range where many eye conditions, such as presbyopia, glaucoma, and cataracts, can develop. Seniors aged 65 and older should have annual eye exams to monitor for age-related eye diseases like cataracts, macular degeneration, and glaucoma.
