Eyelid issues are common and can range from mild discomfort to significant problems that impact vision. At Total Eye Care, we are dedicated to providing effective treatment for these conditions, helping you achieve and maintain optimal eye health.
Blepharitis
Blepharitis is a common eyelid inflammation caused by a chronic bacterial infection of the skin at the base of the eyelashes and lash glands. We all normally have bacteria on our skin and lids, but an excessive collection of lids can cause blepharitis.
The main symptoms of blepharitis are irritation, burning, and itching of the eyelid margins. Scales or ‘granulations’ can often be seen on the eyelashes, especially around the bases of the lashes. Sometimes, the eyes become ‘red-rimmed’ from blepharitis. Vision is usually not affected.
While blepharitis is usually hard to cure, it can be very well controlled with regular, diligent care. Our doctors may use lid scrubs and warm soaks to clean the lids and an antibiotic ointment to decrease the bacteria. An oral antibiotic may be needed to clear the bacteria from the eyelids and glands in severe cases.
Chalazion and Stye
Styes (also called hordeolum) and chalazion are common problems from blepharitis. They are red, painful lumps that grow from the base of your eyelash or under the eyelid and occur from the bacteria blocking the eyelid’s glands. A stye appears at the top of the gland, and a chalazion is deeper in the gland.
Blepharospasm
Blepharospasm is an involuntary, abnormal contraction or twitching of the eyelid muscles. This condition can cause uncontrollable blinking and eye closure, which can be uncomfortable and interfere with daily activities like reading, driving, and watching television.
Blepharospasm is often related to stress, fatigue, or dry eyes, but in some cases, it can be part of a more serious neurological disorder.
Ectropion
Ectropion is a condition in which the eyelid, usually the lower one, turns outward, exposing the inner surface. If not treated, this can cause the eye to dry out and lead to irritation, redness, excessive tearing, and even infection.
Ectropion is often caused by age-related weakening of the eyelid muscles, though it can also result from trauma, surgery, or skin conditions. Total Eye Care offers corrective surgical procedures to restore the eyelid’s natural position and protect the eye’s health.
Entropion
Opposite to ectropion, entropion is a condition where the eyelid turns inward, causing the eyelashes to rub against the eye’s surface. This inward rotation can lead to significant discomfort, redness, tearing, and irritation. Left untreated, it can cause corneal damage or ulcers. Age-related changes, eye infections, or scarring from previous surgeries are common causes of entropion.
Xanthelasma
Xanthelasma refers to yellowish deposits of fat that develop under the skin around the eyelids. These soft, flat, or slightly raised patches are harmless but may indicate high cholesterol levels or other lipid disorders.
While xanthelasma does not generally cause discomfort, many patients seek removal for cosmetic reasons. Treatment options include excision, laser therapy, or chemical peels to remove the deposits.
Droopy Lids
A droopy eyelid can occur from birth, known as congenital ptosis, or it can develop later in life, known as acquired ptosis. Depending on the severity of the ptosis, the eyelid can block or greatly reduce vision depending on how much it obstructs the pupil.
When children have droopy lids, amblyopia or permanent vision loss can occur because they are still in the developmental stage of vision. These children need to be followed by a qualified eye doctor for potential treatment to ensure that their vision develops normally.
- Mechanical causes: trauma, lid swelling
- Natural causes: gravity and aging degrade the tissues of the lid and cause droopiness
- Neurological causes: affect the nerves or muscles of the lids, including stroke, brain tumor, cancer, or myasthenia gravis
Our doctors will examine the droopy eyelid to ensure no underlying conditions.
The treatment for droopy eyelids depends on the specific cause and the severity of the ptosis. If the eyelid blocks your vision and there is no underlying medical disorder, our doctors can perform surgical correction to lift the lid.
