Choosing to get LASIK eye surgery isn’t something you can decide on a whim. It’s a major decision that you really need to think about. At the same time, it’s important not to let myths about the procedure get in the way. In this article, we’ll go over some of the biggest myths surrounding LASIK eye surgery.
Myth #1: LASIK is Temporary
One of the biggest misconceptions about LASIK is that the results aren’t permanent. Too many people believe that LASIK effects will wear off over time due to changes in the eye over time. In actuality, these changes will only require minor retreatment. Most people who choose to have LASIK will rarely need to have any additional major surgery done. Likewise, most surgeons recommend that a patient wait until their early 20’s before undergoing the procedure.
Myth #2: It’s Painful
Like with root canals, pain is one of the most common misconceptions for deciding not to undergo LASIK eye surgery. In reality, the surgeon will apply numbing eye drops that reduce the vast majority of the pain. During the actual procedure, most patients will experience only a little bit of pressure. Likewise, a small amount of discomfort afterwards is normal. Actual pain, however, is rare and usually a sign that something is wrong.
Myth #3: Contact Lenses are Better
For many people, contact lenses seem like the better choice. However, very few people realize that contact lens actually require a lot of work. Regular maintenance must be done involving cleaning and storage. If you’re not careful, dangerous problems can arise from poor care that can cause massive issues if left untreated.
Myth #4: Recovery Takes Too Much Time
As LASIK involves surgery, many people believe that they will have to stay overnight or sit at home for a week waiting to get better. In the vast majority of cases, however, patients are free to resume normal activities after around 6 hours. However, it’s still a good idea to avoid strenuous activities. Likewise, patients shouldn’t drive for a few hours right after the surgery either.
Myth #5: It’s Risky
It’s easy to think that LASIK is a risky procedure. One look around the internet and it’s easy to find many stories about the procedure going wrong. However, the chance of problems actually arising is very low. LASIK is a very low risk procedure that has only gotten safer over time as technological innovations further reduce the risks.
Myth #6: LASIK is for Anyone
LASIK is a great choice for many people. However, it isn’t for everyone. We’re not talking about personal preferences either. Rather, physical problems like eye injuries or dry eye can rule you out of being able to get the procedure done outright. Likewise, if your vision hasn’t been stable for the past year, there’s a high chance that you won’t qualify for LASIK.
