If you’re currently living with nearsightedness, astigmatism, or farsightedness, then LASIK surgery may be the perfect treatment for you. This corrective vision technique utilizes a laser to reshape the cornea and correct a wide range of refractive eye conditions. As with most surgeries, we’re sure that you have a long list of questions that you want to ask your surgeon. Let’s discuss some of the most common questions asked by our patients.
Who Is a Good Candidate for LASIK?
It’s vital to note that while LASIK surgery can treat numerous individuals, some people aren’t good candidates for this surgery. Those who have had a stable eyeglass prescription for at least two years, have no active eye diseases, a healthy cornea, and are over the age of 18 years old make the best candidates for this corrective eye surgery. At your consultation with our expert eye doctors and LASIK surgeons, we will discuss your medical history in detail and examine your eyes to make sure you are a good candidate.
Is LASIK Surgery Painful?
When it comes to LASIK surgery, you’ll be given anesthesia drops that will completely numb the eyes, so there is no need to worry about a painful procedure. However, you may feel some pressure around the eye during the LASIK procedure. After surgery, you may have a gritty sensation in the eye that will be alleviated within a couple of hours. Typically, over-the-counter pain medication is enough for patients to handle any discomfort post-surgery.
How Long Does the Procedure Take?
Typically, LASIK surgery takes around 10 minutes per eye. Typically, one eye is done at a time. The laser will take around 20- 50 seconds to correct your vision problem. The rest of the time will be spent properly preparing the laser setup and numbing the eye.
What Happens if I Blink During the Surgery?
Many patients who undergo LASIK surgery tend to worry about things like blinking during the surgery. It’s important to note that there are many safety precautions taken throughout the procedure to ensure that it’s safe and successful. An eye holder will be inserted to hold back your eyelids during the laser treatment to ensure that you are unable to blink. The laser itself has built-in tracking technology that carefully monitors the position of your eye and effectively adjusts its treatment depending on the small movements that your eyes make during the procedure.
How Long Will the Results Last?
Laser treatment is considered a permanent correction to vision problems. Patients who have had a stable eyeglass prescription for at least a couple of years are going to see the best results from this treatment. However, some blurriness may occur many years later due to the natural aging process.
